What is a Phobia?

A phobia is a severe fear of a certain situation or object, these can vary from being afraid of shadows to the most common fear being afraid of flying. Each person reacts differently when their fear starts to kick in, this can be in the form of

  • Dizziness
  • Nausea
  • Strong fear of dying
  • Breathlessness
  • Helplessness
  • Fainting

Where as some people may only have only 1 reaction some can become so serious that they can end up having a full scale panic attack.

You will mostly know someone who has a phobia or you may have one yourself, its not as uncommon as you may think.

What types of phobias are there?

As you may known phobias vary between everyone, some strange and some common, the common breakdown is:

  • Specific Phobias - Having a fear of a certain object or item
  • Social - Having a fear of being involved in a social situation
  • Agoraphobia - A fear of being trapped in a place where you cant escape

Treating a Phobia

A lot of companies or meetings offer help and support for people with phobias and they can take you through simple steps to help you overcome your fear, but for some more rare phobias (such as the fear of slime) there is little help out there apart from seeking a professional to talk to. Although this is a good option it is not cheap and does not guarantee any results.

The process may involve a series of exposed tests to the phobia itself, its also known as flooding where the person must be around the phobia for a period of time without being able to escape (such as sat down in a chair with the arms tied to it), this may sound extreme to some but it will only happen if the person condones it. The end result will be that the person realizes there is nothing to fear as the phobia cannot harm or hurt them.

Another way of treating a phobia is with a psychological treatment to thinking of a different emotion towards the fear. Its known as counter-conditioning and will usually give a better success rate, this is a common treatment for people who are afraid of flying.
